Parallel Wireless® and Ampere® Collaboration Brings Enhanced Energy Efficiency and Flexibility to GreenRAN™ Open RAN Deployments
Engineered for energy-efficient Open RAN deployments, Ampere’s Arm-based processors and Parallel Wireless’s GreenRAN™ hardware-agnostic DU represent a significant departure from traditional hardware-tied solutions, offering operators the flexibility to optimize network performance while diversifying their supply chain.
Nashua, NH, October 01 2024 – Parallel Wireless, provider of the GreenRAN Open RAN platform, and Ampere, a semiconductor design company delivering high-performance CPUs for cloud and edge applications, today announced a strategic collaboration to deliver an energy-efficient Distributed Unit (DU) powered by Ampere Arm-based high-performance and cost-effective processors. This innovative DU represents a significant departure from traditional Open RAN solutions, which were often tied to specific hardware configurations.
The combination of Ampere’s Arm-based CPUs and Parallel Wireless’s hardware-agnostic DU software provides telecom operators with an alternative to traditional x86-based solutions. The CPU’s high core count enables a range of Macrocell use cases to be addressed with no lookaside acceleration, reducing hardware requirements and energy consumption, while maintaining optimal network performance.
At the heart of this collaboration is the energy efficiency driven by Ampere’s processors, which utilize a reduced instruction set computing (RISC) architecture. This streamlined architecture simplifies processing tasks, enabling lower power consumption compared to traditional complex instruction set computing (CISC) architectures, such as those found in x86 processors. This energy-efficient design translates into significant reductions in both OpEx and CapEx for telecom operators.
“By combining Ampere’s energy-efficient silicon with our hardware-agnostic software, we’re setting a new standard for network power efficiency,” said Netanel Gabizon, CPO of Parallel Wireless. “This partnership demonstrates how we push the boundaries of RAN solutions to improve both performance and power consumption, making TCO a key consideration for operators when selecting products.”
“Ampere processors are designed to deliver the highest performance with the lowest power consumption, perfectly addressing the energy and cost challenges faced by today’s telecom networks,” said Ampere Chief Product Officer, Jeff Wittich. “Our collaboration with Parallel Wireless reinforces Ampere’s commitment to the telco market and enables us to drive innovation within the Open RAN ecosystem.”
This collaboration not only strengthens the supply chain diversity for Open RAN but also addresses one of the industry’s growing challenges: the increasing energy consumption of telecom networks. By offering a high-performing system that significantly reduces power usage, the new DU provides operators with a powerful tool to lower operational costs while maintaining the highest levels of network performance and flexibility.
